Savoy by seasonaldragon1 Savoy by seasonaldragon1
I finally finished my drawing of a cabbage! :dummy: yay
.... and then the scanner killed the variation in the greens x____x oh dear

Anyway, this is for a University project. We had to draw a human, and animal, something man-made, and something natural.
I chose to draw a savoy cabbage, it's more interesting than a lot of other vegetables. But for some reason it took me forever! I really don't know why :<

That looks like it was some serious good practice. You use colored pencils for this? The fractal nature of leaves makes them time intensive to depict in detail. Oh, I want to know how you layered up the color. And the light lined tracery - the places where the cabbage veins are light and the interstitial leaf spaces are dark... How do you do that? For some reason I can't figure out a technique that 'finds' the veins without making them dark.

Thanks ^-^
Yes, I did. I used my Polychromos colouring pencils again.

The method is probably why it took me so long ^^;
I coloured in the main, big veins very lightly with a light green. Then I coloured the bits in between with just light green. I got a slightly darker green and coloured in shapes of the darker areas between the little veins, then I did this again in the shapes I had just coloured, but with an even darker green... it sounds quite confusing, I'm not sure If I've explained it very well ^^;
I just started with the lightest areas first, and finished with the darkest areas. i hope that helps X3

Mmmm, so, draw the highlighted structure first (after all, a 90% luminance will be perceived as full brightness) *experiments* *frownsAtScribble* Well, that's going to need more practice. I'm having trouble at the transition when light areas become the dark areas.

On the last drawing I brought everything up gradually. Going over and over the various areas gradually mixing the color. It helped me improve the composition and increase the color coherency, but doing light lines and high lights is very difficult. Aiko-frikki said something about being able to do light over dark... i think she must have magic pencils... v..v

Oh dear :<
I had to press quite hard in the darker bits to get the colour onto the page, so I'm not surprised that you had trouble to begin with. Working the colour gradually sounds like a good idea, I'm sure the highlights and light areas will come with practice.
I know that I used to colour too darkly in light places sometimes, and once I did that it made the whole shading of the piece wrong x_____x
Wow, I think you're right. It must be magic pencils she's got .o.

Though, she has figured out a way to do it... I will keep trying to discover how.

It is tricky trying to keep the big picture in mind when working on the details. I'll keep practicing. (:

Savoy is just the kind of cabbage it is, although there is a restaurant or something called 'The Savoy' too... I think they just used it as it was a nice sounding food related word X3

This is a fantastic rendition of the savoy cabbage - the veins and texture in the leaves, the brilliant colour, the perfect shading and the general...cabbageness of the image are strikingly beautiful. This calls for an instant favourite.

...Which now means I have a drawing of a cabbage in my favourites.
